Our Adoption Process

  1.   Fill out an application.  Please answer each question fully.  If a question does not  apply, please fill out NA.
     

  2.   Reference checks
     

    • Vet Reference - Please call ahead and let them know that we will be reaching out and it is okay to provide us with information about your current/past pets.  We will be verifying that everyone is up to date on vaccinations, fixed, and getting a feel from them on how they know you as a pet owner.​
       

    • Landlord / Home Owners Association - Please check in with them on their guidelines - we will be speaking to them about any restrictions that they may have to ensure the pup you're looking at will meet their requirements.

    • Personal References - we will call them to get a feel for what type of pet owner you are
       

  3. Phone Interview:  We will give you a call directly and tell you everything you need to know about the pup(s) you're interested in.  This is a perfect time to ask questions and voice concerns.  Depending upon what you are looking for, we may make suggestions on possible options for your family.​
     

  4. Home Visit:  This is not to judge your home but rather to ensure the home is safe for one of our rescue pups.  Each pup has his/her own needs and requirements.  
     

    • Note:  As long as we can find a volunteer in your area to do our home check, we will be able to move forward with your application no matter the distance you live from us.  With this said, be aware that you must travel to Watertown, SD to finalize an adoption - we will not transport a dog to their forever home.​
       

  5. Meet & Greet:  Meet the pups who may be the perfect fit for your next family member!  We will not schedule any meets (excluding public events) until all above steps are completed and you have been approved to adopt. ​​​
     

  6. Trial Home:  If all goes well at the meet and greet, we will be able to begin a trial run.  We offer a 1 week period where we will stay in close contact to make sure that things are going well. 
     

    • Your adoption fee is held during this time.  If for any reason the trial does not work out, you are required to make arrangements to bring the pup back to us in Watertown, SD.  Once the pup is returned, your adoption fee is returned.
       

    • If the trial goes well, we finalize the adoption by registering your information to the pup's microchip.  After this point, at any point the dog must be returned to us, the adoption fee is non refundable.
       

Adoption Donation Fees

General Adoption Donation Fees:

  • Adult Dogs (1 year +)  $250-$450
     

  • Puppies (Under 1 year)  $300 - $450
     

    • Note:  Puppies under 6 months of age will require a deposit with a spay/neuter contract.  All puppies will be required to be fixed by the age of 7 months and once proof of the surgery is provided, the deposit will be sent.​

  • Age Appropriate Vaccinates (DHPP & Rabies)
     

  • Spay/Neuter
     

    • Note:  Puppies under 6 months of age will require a deposit with a spay/neuter contract.  All puppies will be required to be fixed by the age of 7 months and once proof of the surgery is provided, the deposit will be sent.​​
       

  • Heartworm Tested (6 months and older)​
     

  • Current on flea/tick/heatworm/deworming protocols
     

    • We often send home the pup's next dose as well!​
       

  • Microchipped
     

  • Dental check (cleaning as needed)
     

  • Grooming / Any other Medical Expenses
     

  • Collar and Leash

Please Note: 

 

***Sometimes we have multiple applications for the same dog.  We do our very best to choose the best fit for the dog, but this does not mean you are not a good adoptive family, just rather the dog fit into another home better.  We may not make a decision until we have visited with all of the families interested.

***We are here to help - we want this adoption to work!  We will always give advice and offer potential solutions.  We do check in periodically during the adjustment phase to ensure that everything is going well.  We encourage updates, pictures, and funny stories!

***We try our very best to be timely in processing our applications - on average, this can take a few days up to a week, depending upon how quickly references can be reached.  We will communicate with you via email, text, and phone calls.

***If you have not heard from us within 10 days of submitting your application, please email us at sarahstreasures@hotmail.com.  We have had a few people who have submitted an application which we never received!
